Happy Friday friends! I am so excited to be sharing this book review today because this is absolutely one of my new all time favorite books. Recently I read Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and when I say recently I mean I devoured this 500 page book in 4 days. This was not a required reading for me but one I had been wanting to read, especially in the Fall time. I decided since I had a bit of a break from school, I’d give it a go and thank goodness I did.
The story opens up with Mr.Lockwood coming upon his journeys to Wuthering Heights, a place so mysterious and lovely, later to be told the story of two young people who once presided there, Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. There is a few things I want to note that I liked/disliked about this book so that if you have yet to read it, it might be easier to understand.
First, the narration of the story is told by a woman who lived through the story she is telling Mr.Lockwood. The book goes back and forth (mostly sticking to the past) and therefore it might be confusing unless you pay attention, to understand which time period you are currently in, past or present. Second, they’re servants in the book (this making sense due to the time period and overall story line) and while we are told the story through the eyes of a woman calling the characters “miss” or “mr.”, it is good to recognize that both the first and last names are used for the characters. This seems obvious but it did confuse me one or two times when reading. Those are really the only two aspects I’d advice readers to be aware. What I loved about this book far surpassed any of my dislikes. The weather and environment that this story is set in is like a character itself. It is a perfect reading to cozy up and read in the Fall or Winter I found and I thought it so unique how Emily was able to portray that. Another aspect I loved so much because it was my first time experiencing it was the suspense. I never expected the book to go in the direction it did and I was amazed mostly with the last 150 pages more than anything else. This book went from me trying to get it done in a certain amount of time, to not being able to put it down. I cannot recommend this enough and I am so excited to read more of the Brontë, although I am disappointed this was Emily’s only book.
If you have read this novel, what were your thoughts? I would love to know! If not, go pick it up. It is an absolute must!
5 Star Rating:
(I would give it even more if I could!!)
Quote of the Day: If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.” -Wuthering Heights.
