Happy Wednesday my friends! Half of the week is over… we can do this! Today I want my first travel post to be about a trip of a lifetime that I happened to be fortunate enough to go on. A few years ago I went on a European expedition to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. This trip sparked a new passion of mine, traveling. If you have ever been to any of these three countries you know how insanely beautiful and captivating each one is. I started my journey in Rome Italy. From the olive oil to the Sistine Chapel, it was by far the most fascinating place I have ever been. Once in Greece I found a new love, white and blue buildings. A picture can not do this place justice. From Santorini to Mykonos, these two islands give any place a run for their money. My favorite part had to be all the local vendors. You could walk down a street and not even be able to see in front of you without people popping in asking you to buy their handmade creations. It was enticing. After Greece we made our way over to Turkey. Istanbul has to be the most divergent, eccentric city I have ever been in my whole life. I learned so much and the Grand Bazar and Blue Mosque were the highlights of my entire trip. I had the opportunity to travel to other cities within these three countries and all were just as amazing as the one prior. I never realized how mind-altering and humbling traveling could be. It inspired me and brought out an adventurous side of me I never knew I had.
I wanted to share some of the highlights of my trip if any of you are planning on traveling to any of these places in the near future. The places I will mention absolutely made my trip unforgettable!
Italy: If you are going to Rome in particular you have to of course visit the Vatican/Sistine Chapel. It takes up about half your day and it is worth every second. Make sure to get there super early because the line to get in runs at least a mile around the place (yes it is that big). There is so many other historical landmarks to visit and definitely get to those as well, but if you are looking for something to do that is not nearly as touristy, take a walk to the Spanish Steps. It not only has the best shopping, but it also has little local pop-up shops with musicians, gelato, and the best restaurants you will ever try!
Greece: It might sound crazy, but if you are in Santorini you must get the foot spa pedicure with the fishes! It was one of the weirdest experiences I have ever had. It is definitely something that locals do and is a fun touristy thing to try! My next suggestion for both Santorini and Mykonos is simple; explore! Get lost in all the cobblestone streets. There is nothing more amazing than finding yourself engrossed in a country you’re experiencing for the first time. I picked up little bits and bobs that will forever hold a place in my heart.
Turkey: As I said earlier, the Grand Bazar and the Blue Mosque are the two places you have to go see. It was unlike anything I have ever experienced. You get to wear what the Turkish people wear on an everyday basis and you really feel at one with the city and the other natives. I definitely recommend trying the spices as well. Turkey is known for their spices but how can you go and not purchase some yourself. I really enjoyed just walking around Istanbul. I loved seeing all the dogs running around and the locals selling their food and gifts. One activity I signed up for was a class that talked all about the rug industry. People spend thousands and thousands of dollars for these beautiful one of a kind rugs that you will have in your homes forever. I purchased a handmade pillow that took almost two weeks to make in this class and it is one of my favorite pieces I own.
No matter where you go in the world, always have a positive and bright outlook. It is amazing how much you can learn when you just have the right mindset. As Melody Truong once said, “I am in love with cities I’ve never been to and people I have never met”. Have a wonderful Wednesday my friends, stay tuned for a fashion filled post on Friday!
